Make Noise on Twitter

We are living in an age where social media has a loud voice.  Twitter is used by influential figures and is a great way to publicly connect with politicians, media personel and doctors.  If you think that Twitter won’t make a difference, you need to get on board and experience it’s influence.
Over the next two weeks we have one goal – create as much noise as possible and let the state and federal Governments know that we do NOT accept their inability to negotiate the final 46 internship positions for 2013.  The states that need to be targeted are NSW and VIC.  It is important to keep in mind that QLD, NT, WA and ACT have stepped up and negotiated with the federal health minister.

What should you tweet about?

Targeting NSW and VIC politicians, along with key public figures who may have an interest, we are fighting to raise awareness of:

  • Aging population and predicted shortfall of doctors
  • NSW and VIC need to cooperate with the Federal Government to find remaining 46 positions.
  • The fact that medical education and training does not stop after medical school and we need investments in training to ensure we have the specialists and GPs we have in the future
  • Importing overseas trained doctors in unethical and against WHO and COAG guidelines.  So why are we sending away Australian Trained doctors?
  • Rural doctor shortages – so create more rural internships.

HELP! I’m new! How do I use twitter?

Twitter is simple – short succinct messages + a ‘hashtag’ which links your comment with other people who are talking about the same thing.

On twitter you have a choice of making a statement about it, and adding a hashtag OR tweeting to an actual person.  You also have the option of ‘Re-tweeting’ which means that if you like someone elses point, you can re-tweet it from your account.

The best tweets have links attached to them.  So be sure to share the www.interncrisis.org website or links to articles for example.

Download tweetdeck

This is a really useful application for your computer which makes tweeting and following the #interncrisis really simple.  In addition to the simplicity of it, you can schedule tweets.  That way, if you are busy, you can write some tweets at the start of the day and schedule them to tweet throughout the day automatically. http://www.tweetdeck.com/

Then add a column to your tweetdeck (option at the top called ‘add a column’) which follows #interncrisis.  Every time you see someone post something useful on #interncrisis you should follow them.
