Pulkit Singh – New South Wales

Hi everyone, my name is Pulkit and I am an international student from Vancouver, Canada. I am currently my final year of medical school at UNSW.

The first time I came to Australia was for a family holiday 8 years ago. I fell in love with the country, the weather and the beaches, and wondered why my family migrated to cold Canada rather than a place like sunny Australia. When the opportunity arose for me to study medicine in Sydney, I was excited to make the big move I’d been dreaming of.

Living in Australia for the past 6 years has been a great experience. I have grown as a person, become a doctor (almost!), and built connections with supervisors, colleagues and supporting friends. I have travelled the country, learnt the heritage, and also have learnt about the Australian health care system.

I entered medicine wanting to be a GP, and my GP rotation reinforced this desire. Seeing the close relationship that GPs have with their patients is appealing to me. I am also interested in Emergency medicine, and would love to work in a rural area where I could do a bit of both these things. I feel it would be extremely rewarding to give back to communities in need, using the skills I’ve learnt.

If I am unable to complete my internship in Australia, I will have to take the degree Australia gave me and look for work elsewhere. Unfortunately this will not be easy, as I will be an International medical graduate, lower down the priority list in other countries as well.

The news everyday reminds us of the doctor shortage in Australia, both in rural and urban areas. It saddens me to think that many Australian trained doctors who wish to stay in the country, will not be able to despite the growing need.

Pulkit is still waiting to hear if she will get an internship. If you want to help her, please support the #interncrisis campaign.Take Action
